Quick answer
- Mountains & adventure: Jebel Jais — the UAE’s highest peak, zipline and viewing decks.
- Heritage: Dhayah Fort, the National Museum and Al Jazirah Al Hamra ghost village.
- Coast & resorts: Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra and the public beaches.
- Best base: stay on Al Marjan Island or Al Hamra for beaches; downtown RAK for lower prices.
Ras Al Khaimah packs mountains, desert, coastline and heritage into a single emirate that is small enough to explore in a few days. The best places to visit in Ras Al Khaimah split into four clear groups: the Jebel Jais mountain area for adventure and cooler air, the historic forts and old town for heritage, the beaches and Al Marjan Island for resort time, and the desert for safaris and stargazing. Most first-time visitors mix two or three of these rather than trying to see everything in one trip.
Mountains and adventure
Jebel Jais is the headline attraction and the highest mountain in the UAE. The drive up is an attraction in itself, with smooth switchback roads, viewing decks and the world’s longest zipline near the summit. Mornings are cooler and clearer, and the temperature at the top can be several degrees lower than on the coast. If you only add one big-ticket experience to a RAK trip, this is usually it.

Heritage and history
RAK has a long history as a pearling and trading hub, and several sites tell that story. Dhayah Fort is the only hilltop fort still standing in the UAE, with panoramic views over date plantations to the sea. The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, set inside a former ruler’s fort, covers archaeology, pearling and Bedouin life. And Al Jazirah Al Hamra — the emirate’s abandoned coral-block “ghost village” — is one of the most atmospheric heritage walks in the country.
Coast, beaches and Al Marjan Island
The coastline is where most visitors stay. Al Marjan Island is a cluster of man-made islands lined with resorts and the future home of Wynn Al Marjan Island, opening in 2027. Al Hamra next door has a marina, golf and a long beach. For free, public access, the city’s open beaches are quiet on weekdays. Our best beaches guide compares them.
Desert experiences
Inland, the dunes are the setting for desert safaris, dune drives, camel rides, dinner camps and some of the clearest night skies near Dubai. RAK’s desert is generally quieter than the heavily-touristed circuits closer to the city. See the desert safari guide to compare camps and formats.
How many days do you need?
Three to five nights is enough to combine one mountain day, one heritage or desert day, and the rest split between the beach and your resort. Families often slow this down further; couples and adventure travellers tend to pack more in. Use the itineraries for ready-made routes.
