Quick answer

  • Best overall: hiring a car — RAK is spread out.
  • No car? Taxis and ride-hailing cover most trips.
  • Resorts often arrange transfers and tours.
  • Jebel Jais & desert are far easier with your own car or a tour.

Ras Al Khaimah is spread out, with the coast, the city, the mountains and the desert all some distance apart, so how you get around shapes your trip. For most visitors the easiest option is hiring a car, but taxis, ride-hailing and hotel transfers cover the gaps well if you would rather not drive. There is a public bus network, but it is geared more to residents than sightseeing.

Hiring a car

A rental car gives you the most freedom, especially for Jebel Jais, the desert and the heritage sites, which are awkward to reach otherwise. See our dedicated car hire guide for what to know.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are available and ride-hailing apps operate in the area, which is convenient for trips between the resorts, the city and the malls. For one-off long trips like a mountain run, agreeing the fare or using a tour can work out simpler.

Hotel transfers and tours

Many resorts arrange airport transfers and can book tours and excursions — a good option for the desert safari, the zipline or a Jebel Jais trip if you are not driving.

Buses and getting from the airport

Local buses exist but are limited for tourists. Most visitors arrive via Dubai — see Dubai airport to RAK for transfer options.
