Quick answer

  • What: an abandoned pearling-era village of coral-block houses.
  • Why go: one of the UAE’s most atmospheric heritage walks.
  • Best time: late afternoon; respectful, quiet exploring.
  • Bring: closed shoes, water — some structures are fragile.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra is an abandoned coastal village on the southern edge of Ras Al Khaimah, often called the emirate’s “ghost village.” Once a thriving pearling and fishing settlement, it was largely deserted in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving behind a remarkably intact townscape of coral-block houses, courtyards, a mosque and a souk. Walking its sandy lanes is one of the most atmospheric heritage experiences in the UAE, and a favourite with photographers.

The history

The village grew around the pearling economy that sustained much of the lower Gulf before the 1930s. Homes were built from coral stone and gypsum, materials that kept interiors cool. As the pearl trade collapsed and the country modernised, residents moved to newer housing, and the settlement was gradually left to the elements. Because it was abandoned relatively recently and left largely undisturbed, it survives as a rare, near-complete example of a traditional Gulf town.

What to expect

This is an open, undeveloped heritage site rather than a polished attraction. You wander between roofless houses, peer into courtyards and walk past the old mosque and market buildings. Some structures are fragile or partially collapsed, so keep to clear paths, do not climb on walls, and take nothing with you. The village also has a reputation in local folklore for being haunted, which adds to the atmosphere, especially towards dusk.

Visiting tips

Late afternoon is the best time — softer light for photography and cooler temperatures for walking. Wear closed shoes, bring water, and treat the site respectfully as a place of heritage. It is only a short drive from Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra, which makes it easy to combine with a beach day.
