What it’s actually like

The highest-rated specialty stay in Ras Al Khaimah, with a catch on the bill

The Dunes sits in the Al Wadi desert, on the same stretch of sand as the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi, and it does something unusual: it ranks first of 15 specialty lodging properties in Ras Al Khaimah on TripAdvisor, with 4.8 out of 5 from 246 reviews. That is a stronger guest verdict than most of the emirate’s five-star beach resorts manage, and it is earned on hospitality and atmosphere rather than thread count.

There is one consistent complaint, and it is worth knowing before you book rather than after. Activities and extras are charged separately, on top of the room rate. Guests who arrive expecting a package and find themselves paying per camel ride, per buggy and per safari are the ones who leave disappointed. Price the whole evening, not the tent, and the value picture changes entirely.

Location and getting there

Al Wadi is the emirate’s desert interior, a reserve of red dune and scrub behind the coastal strip. The Dunes sits alongside the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert, which tells you the landscape is the same — the price is not.

The drive from Dubai International is around 70 minutes. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is much closer. The camp offers pick-up and drop-off, which is worth taking if you are not driving, because the final approach is on sand and unlit at night. Confirm the arrangement when you book rather than assuming it is included.

Where you sleep

Around 30 units, and the range is unusually wide for a desert camp. The published categories are premium, deluxe and economic dome tents, an igloo tent, an elevated treehouse, a heritage hut and a platinum pod. The domes are the core product; the treehouse and the pod are the ones that book out first.

The economic dome is the entry point and it is exactly that — a simpler tent at a simpler price. If you are choosing on photographs, be clear which tier you are booking, because the gap between economic and premium is visible. Full in-tent specifications by category are not published in detail, so ask before you pay if a private bathroom or air conditioning is non-negotiable for you.

Facilities and food

This is a camp, not a resort, and the facilities list reflects that. WiFi is available. Dining runs through the camp’s own desert dining offer, with dinner included in certain camping packages and a fire show in the evening. A culture night is part of the standard programme.

Do not expect a pool, a spa or a kids’ club. What you get instead is a fire, a sky with no light pollution and a small operation that guests repeatedly describe as personable. That is the trade, and the guest score suggests most people are happy with it.

What you actually do here

The activity list is the longest of any camp in the emirate: morning and evening desert safari, dune bashing by 4×4, camel trekking, horse riding, quad bike tours, and buggy tours in two and four seaters. Hot-air balloon flights are sold on site, which is the one thing here you cannot easily arrange from a beach hotel.

Mountain tours to Jebel Jais and Al Ghail are also offered. Note that Jebel Jais closes for the summer — road, attractions and restaurants all shut — so confirm the mountain is open before you book that excursion. Our Jebel Jais accommodation guide explains the season, and things to do in Ras Al Khaimah covers the rest of the emirate.

Who it suits

Couples and small groups who want one or two nights of desert rather than a week of it. Families with older children who will use the buggies and the camels. First-time visitors to the UAE who want the desert night without the Ritz-Carlton bill. Anyone whose priority is the experience and the people rather than the bathroom fittings.

What is good

  • Ranked #1 of 15 specialty lodging properties in Ras Al Khaimah on TripAdvisor
  • 4.8 out of 5 across 246 reviews — a consistent, well-evidenced score
  • The widest unit range of any camp here, from economic dome to treehouse
  • Hot-air balloon flights bookable on site
  • Same desert setting as the Ritz-Carlton, at a fraction of the rate

What is not good

  • Extras are charged separately — the most common complaint in guest reviews
  • The advertised room rate is not the cost of the stay once activities are added
  • No pool, spa or resort facilities
  • In-tent specifications by category are not published in useful detail
  • Desert summer heat makes this a cool-season proposition for most people

Value verdict

From around AED 404 per night, check live rates. That figure is honest for the tent and misleading for the trip. Decide which two or three activities you actually want, price them, and add them to the room rate before you compare against anything else. Done that way, The Dunes still reads as good value — the guest score is not an accident. Done the other way, you will feel nickel-and-dimed, which is exactly what the reviews say.

Who should skip it?

Skip it if you want an all-inclusive price with nothing to think about at checkout. Skip it if you need a pool, a beach or hotel-grade bathrooms. Skip it in high summer unless you are comfortable with desert heat. And skip it if you are staying a week — this is a one or two night property, and most guests treat it that way.

FAQ

Are activities included in the room rate?

Generally no. Safari, camel rides, quad bikes, buggies and balloon flights are charged separately on top of the nightly rate, and this is the most frequent complaint in guest reviews. Some camping packages include dinner. Confirm exactly what your rate covers at the point of booking, in writing.

Is there WiFi?

Yes, WiFi is available at The Dunes. That distinguishes it from some other desert camps in the emirate, where connectivity is either limited or absent entirely. If staying connected matters to you, this is one of the reasons to choose here over a more stripped-back Al Wadi camp.

Can you do a hot-air balloon flight from the camp?

Balloon flights are sold on site, which makes a dawn flight straightforward to arrange from your tent rather than driving somewhere before sunrise. Flights are weather-dependent and seasonal, and they are priced separately. Book ahead rather than assuming availability on the morning.

Which unit should I book?

The premium dome is the sensible default. The economic dome is noticeably simpler, and the treehouse, igloo and platinum pod are the novelty categories that sell out first. Detailed specifications per category are not published, so ask about bathrooms and air conditioning before paying if either is essential.

Bottom line

The best-reviewed specialty stay in Ras Al Khaimah, let down only by a pricing model that surprises people. Go in with the full cost worked out and it is one of the more satisfying nights in the emirate. See the full Ras Al Khaimah hotel guide for how it compares.
