What it’s actually like

A 2024 Sofitel conversion wrapped around a golf course and four pools

Sofitel Ras Al Khaimah Al Hamra Beach Resort only carries that name because of a rebrand. Accor took over the former Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort and converted it between May and July 2024. That detail matters more than it sounds: a great many listings, map entries and third-party pages still show the Hilton name, Hilton photographs and Hilton-era reviews, so it is easy to research two different hotels without realising it.

What you actually get is a large beachfront property of 339 keys — 292 rooms and 47 suites — with a private beach, four pools spread across roughly 6,000 sqm, a Sofitel Spa using Clarins products, a kids’ club, and Al Hamra Golf Club immediately next door. It suits golfers, families who want enough water to spread out around, and couples who want a French-branded five-star at a lower rate than the Waldorf Astoria or the Ritz-Carlton Al Hamra a few minutes away.

The single biggest reason to hesitate is that this is a conversion rather than a new build. The structure, the room shapes and much of the circulation date from the resort’s Hilton years. Public areas and food and beverage have been reworked, but you should not expect the hardware of a ground-up 2024 opening. Look at recent guest photographs, not brand imagery, before you book a specific room category.

Location

The resort sits in Al Hamra, the established resort district on the southern side of Ras Al Khaimah and the first cluster of hotels you reach coming up the coast from Dubai. It is a genuinely walkable pocket by UAE standards: the golf club adjoins the resort, and Al Hamra Marina and Al Hamra Mall sit within the same masterplan rather than a motorway drive away.

Reckon on about 80 minutes from Dubai International, longer on a Thursday evening. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is much closer but has far fewer routes, so most visitors still arrive via Dubai. If you want to be nearer the Wynn development and the newer island hotels instead, you want Al Marjan Island, which is a further ten to fifteen minutes north. The two areas feel different: Al Hamra is mature and green, Al Marjan is newer, flatter and still building.

Jebel Jais, the mountain road and zipline, is a drive of over an hour inland. Treat it as a full day out rather than an afternoon whim.

Rooms and suites

There are 339 keys: 292 rooms and 47 suites. The inventory spreads across the main building and lower-rise blocks, which is why views vary so much between categories at similar prices. Sea-facing and garden or golf-facing rooms are not priced far apart in low season, and the difference in what you look at is considerable, so it is worth paying up if a view matters to you.

Because this is a rebranded property, room hardware is where opinions divide most sharply. The Sofitel fit-out has changed finishes and soft furnishings, but bathroom layouts and room proportions still follow the original building. Some guests read that as comfortable and generously sized; others expected a new-build feel and did not get it. If you are sensitive to that, request a recently refurbished room at the time of booking and confirm again at check-in rather than assuming.

Beach, pool, and facilities

The pool complex is the strongest single argument for this resort. Four pools cover roughly 6,000 sqm and the resort bills it as the largest pool area in the Northern Emirates. In practice that means you can usually find water that is not crowded even when occupancy is high, which is not something you can say about most beach resorts on this coast in February.

There is a private beach, and the Sofitel Spa operates with Clarins. The gym, kids’ club and meeting facilities are all on site. The golf club next door is the practical differentiator: very few RAK resorts put a course within walking distance of the lobby, and if golf is part of the trip this removes the daily drive that staying on Al Marjan Island would force on you.

Dining

The resort operates seven to eight food and beverage outlets depending on the season and on which source you read; the published count is not consistent, so check what is actually open for your dates. Named venues include WAKA, REUNION and VERITAS. Alcohol is served, which is standard for licensed resorts in Ras Al Khaimah but still worth confirming if you are comparing against non-licensed options.

Half-board and all-inclusive packages are sold at various times of year. If you want a genuine all-inclusive rather than a bolt-on meal plan, the dedicated all-inclusive resorts in the emirate are a cleaner fit; a package here is a meal plan attached to an a la carte resort, and the distinction shows up on the bill.

Family suitability

Good, with a caveat. The pool area is the reason to bring children here: four pools over that much space means you are not fighting for a lounger next to a splash zone, and the kids’ club takes the pressure off the middle of the day. The beach is calm and the resort is flat and easy to walk with a pushchair.

The caveat is room size. Families of four should check the specific category rather than trusting a generic family-room label, and connecting rooms are worth requesting early. If you want interconnecting space as a near-certainty, Rove Al Marjan Island designs a large share of its rooms to connect, and our family shortlist compares the options properly.

Couples suitability

Workable rather than ideal. There is a spa, a decent restaurant spread and a quiet stretch of beach away from the main pool, and the rate is markedly lower than the two flagship luxury properties in the same district. If you are looking for a calm adults-focused trip, however, a 339-key resort with a kids’ club and a large family pool complex will not deliver that reliably in school holidays.

Couples who want quiet should either book outside UAE school breaks or look at the desert alternative at Al Wadi Desert, which is a completely different kind of stay.

What is good

  • Four pools over roughly 6,000 sqm — genuinely hard to crowd out
  • Golf next door, without a shuttle or a hire car
  • Private beach in a mature, walkable part of Al Hamra
  • Five-star branding well below the rate of the neighbouring flagship resorts
  • Sofitel Spa with Clarins, plus a full kids’ club and gym

What is not good

  • It is a 2024 rebrand of an older Hilton, not a new build — room hardware reflects that in places
  • Outdated Hilton-era photographs and reviews still circulate widely and will mislead you
  • Large and family-heavy: not a quiet choice during UAE school holidays
  • The published outlet count varies between sources, so confirm what is open for your dates

Value verdict

Lead-in rates start from around AED 515 per night, which places this in the middle of the five-star field in Ras Al Khaimah — above the four-star island resorts, well below the Waldorf Astoria and the two Ritz-Carltons. For that gap you give up some polish and gain a much larger pool footprint and on-site golf.

Rates move sharply with season. Summer pricing in Ras Al Khaimah can be less than half the winter figure, and the pools matter more then. Check live rates rather than treating the lead-in number as a fixed price, and compare against the wider luxury field before deciding.

Who should book Sofitel Ras Al Khaimah Al Hamra Beach Resort?

Golfers, first. Nothing else in the emirate puts a course this close to a five-star beach resort. After that: families who prioritise pool space over room newness, and travellers who want a recognisable international five-star in Al Hamra without paying flagship money. It is also a sensible pick if you want to be near the marina and mall rather than on a still-developing island.

Who should skip it?

Anyone whose priority is brand-new rooms and contemporary design should look elsewhere; the conversion shows. Couples wanting a quiet adults-led stay will be happier in the desert or at a smaller property. And if your trip is built around Wynn Al Marjan Island, staying in Al Hamra adds a drive at both ends of every evening — the island hotels make more sense.

FAQ

Is this the same hotel as the Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort?

Yes. Accor converted the former Hilton Al Hamra Beach & Golf Resort to Sofitel between May and July 2024. It is the same site and largely the same building, rebranded and reworked. Older photographs, reviews and map listings under the Hilton name still circulate, so check the date on anything you read.

How many pools does the resort have?

Four, covering roughly 6,000 sqm in total. The resort describes this as the largest pool area in the Northern Emirates. The practical benefit is space: even at high occupancy you can normally find a quieter pool rather than queueing for a lounger at the main one.

How far is it from Dubai airport?

Around 80 minutes by road from Dubai International in normal conditions, longer on Thursday and Friday evenings. Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is much nearer but serves far fewer routes, so most guests still transfer from Dubai. Book a transfer in advance if you land late at night.

Is it good for golf?

It is the strongest golf base in Ras Al Khaimah, because the resort adjoins Al Hamra Golf Club rather than shuttling you to it. Confirm green fees, guest rates and tee-time access directly with the resort when you book, as packages change and are not always bundled into the room rate.

Bottom line

A big, competent five-star beach resort with an unusually large pool complex and a golf course on the doorstep, sold at a price that undercuts the two flagship properties in the same district. Go in knowing it is a 2024 rebrand of an older Hilton rather than a new build, and it represents solid value. Expect new-build finishes and you will be disappointed.
